CAV Infantry Upgrades Part I
When I think about infantry in CAV, I can’t help but feel that there’s something missing. A recon unit, perhaps? This got me thinking about other infantry units and upgrades that could be fun, so I decided to write some of these up and share them.
This is the first of two or three articles. I haven’t playtested these yet, so they are completely unproven. I welcome any feedback. Especially, playtest feedback. After we’ve all had some time to try these, I’ll repost a page with all of the new rules in one place. I’ll also be adding these to the Task Force Builder with some kind of switch to turn off the optional rules.
Enjoy and comment away. Steve
New Rules
Faction Speciality
All of these upgrades are skills that every army should have availability. However, some armies might be especially good at them – underwater operations for Malvernis as an example. A Faction Speciality upgrade is available for half-price (rounded up) to the named faction.
New Upgrades
Force Recon Training
Availability: Infantry Only (Terran Speciality)
Point Cost: 10 points (5 points Terran)
Effect: Changes the model role to Recon and grants the model the Extreme Mobility SA. If all models in a Section have Force Recon Training then the Section also gains the abilities ofa Recon Section during the Deployment Phase
Frogman Training
Availability: All Rifle Teams in a Rifle Section (Malvernan Speciality)
Point Cost: 20 points (10 points Malvernis) per model in the Section. All models must be upgraded.
Effect: Before the Deployment Phase players may set aside all Sections with this Upgrade along with their Initiative Cards. At the beginning of any game Turn, a player with a Frogman Section in their Task Force may add one Initiative Card to the Initiative Deck for each Frogman Section they wish to Deploy that Turn. When one of their Initiative Cards is turned over, they may choose to Activate the Frogman Section. The Frogman Models are deployed in any Shallow or Under Water terrain that connects to any edge of the table through continuous Shallow Water or Under Water Terrain. The Models may deploy within 12” of enemy models, provided they can meet the water requirements described above. The Models may then perform their Turn as normal. Frogmen also gain the benefits of the Rebreather SA, described below.
Large Formation Training (LFT)
Availability: All Rifle Teams in a Rifle Section (Templar Speciality)
Point Cost: 10 points (5 points Templar) per model in the Section. All models must be upgraded.
Effect: A model with LFT raises its support bonus to +2 when supporting another model from the same section in close combat. Only one model may provide the +2 in a single attack, and additional models supporting provide +1.
New Special Abilities
Extreme Mobility SA
Works like the Improved Mobility SA except that Heavy Woods is also treated as open terrain.
Rebreather SA
Models with this SA may treat Shallow Water and Under Water as Open Terrain.
